Introduction

Early Life and Education
Kretschmann was born in Spaichingen, Baden-Württemberg, on May 17, 1948. He studied law at the University of Tübingen and worked as a lawyer before entering politics.
Political Career
Kretschmann began his political career in the 1980s, when he was elected to the Baden-Württemberg Landtag, the state parliament. He served as leader of the Green parliamentary group from 1992 to 2002. In 2011, Kretschmann led the Greens to victory in the Baden-Württemberg state election. He became the first Green politician to lead a German state, and formed a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Kretschmann has been re-elected twice, in 2016 and 2021. He is the longest-serving Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, and is one of the most popular politicians in Germany.
